5 Things You Didn’t Know About Beer

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Beer

Beer is the third most popular beverage on earth, after water and tea, and for many, it's a way of life! Here are 5 fun facts you didn't know about beer...

The oldest known recipe for beer is over 4,000 years old

The clay tablet pictured above dates back to 3100-3000 BC, Mesopotamia, and according to The British Museum, it shows the allocation of beer.

Additionally, according to Smithsonian magazine, Egyptian pyramid workers were paid with beer, approximately four to five litres a day! Archaeologist, Dr. Patrick McGovern, stated; "you would have had a rebellion on your hands if they'd run out. The pyramids might not have been built if there hadn't been enough beer."

Exposure to light makes beer go bad

Beer is flavoured with hops, but when hops are exposed to sunlight, they produce a 'sulfurous' compound that smells skunk-like! Consequently, most beer bottles are brown to reduce light exposure and prevent the stinky process from happening!

On that note, here are some beer storage tips so you can maximise your beer enjoyment:
  • Store your beers upright to reduce the risk of contamination from the cap.
  • Store your beers below room temperature to keep your beers fresh.
  • Store your beers in the dark.

Beer may be good for your bones

In 2009, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study, highlighting a correlation between alcohol intake (beer, wine and liquor) and bone mineral density. The researchers found that "moderate consumption of alcohol may be beneficial to bone in men and postmenopausal women."

Zythology is the study of beer

Yes, it is a thing! From the Greek words "zythos" (beer) and logos (study), Zythology is the study of beer. Zythology involves the analysis of ingredients, the effect ingredients have on the brewing process, the knowledge of beer styles and history, and the application of beer pairings. A zythologist is the ultimate beer connoisseur. 🍺

In the UK, 93,000 litres of beer is lost in facial hair each year

Please note, this is most likely an estimate, rather than a fact, as I am not sure how they would measure this! However, it is believable with all the beards and beer in the UK 😄
