Is Vodka Really Made From Potatoes?

While vodka can be made from potatoes, it accounts for only a teeny tiny fraction of vodka production - approximately 1%. In reality, most vodka is made from grain - rye being the most common. Vodka can also be made with sugar byproducts, grapes, or even milk whey.
How is vodka made?
Traditionally, vodka is made from grain, which is combined with water and heated. Yeast is then added to the mixture, starting the fermentation, which converts sugars into alcohol.
The next step is distillation. To check whether there is enough alcohol present, the mixture is set on fire. If it doesn't catch fire, it means the mixture does not contain enough alcohol and will need to be distilled again.
Pure vodka must be free of flavour, which is why it is repeatedly heated, distilled and filtered. Finished vodka has an alcohol content of approximately 40 per cent.
